Onion, being high in water content, is a delicate commodity to store and requires special procedure and parameters, giving rise to the concept of Onion cold storage. Onions can often lose weight when stored for a long time. Sprouting and rot can also occur. The crop should be carefully dried in the field before storage to minimize rot. According to data from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), more than 9 lakh tonnes of onions are damaged every year due to the poor preservation system, forcing the government to import roughly the same amount in order to meet domestic demand.
Onion growers in Faridpur are optimistic about the newly constructed model storages for onion and garlic, which promise to reduce spoilage and enhance profitability.
